2022 Nissan Frontier vs 2022 Ford Maverick

2022 Nissan Frontier vs 2022 Ford Maverick

The mid-size pickup market is a hugely competitive one, with most major truck manufacturers offering at least one model in the segment. But one automaker’s appearance in this market often comes as a surprise even to devoted pickup fans. Nissan is perhaps better known for family SUVs, sedans, and hatchbacks than powerful trucks, but the 2022 Nissan Frontier offers one of the best combinations of power and value available today.

But can this model really compete with those from more established truck makers? To find out, we’ve put it up against the 2022 Ford Maverick, and here’s how it went.

Powerful Standard Engine

When it comes to raw engine power, there’s only one winner in this test. The 2022 Nissan Frontier boasts a 3.8L V6 gas engine making fully 310 horsepower and 281lb-ft of torque. This is an exceptional output for a truck in this class, and when combined with the nine-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel or all-wheel drive it delivers a confident and reassuring feel with plenty in reserve.

The Ford Maverick is no slouch and offers a great level of everyday performance, but its horsepower output of 250 hp simply can’t match the Frontier. The standard Maverick pairs front-wheel drive with an eight-speed automatic transmission, although all-wheel drive is available.

Towing Capacity

But the true test of a pickup is in its capability figures, and the Frontier offers an impressive towing capacity of up to 3,055kg. Not surprisingly given the large deficit in engine power, the Maverick doesn’t come close, with a maximum rating of just 1,818kg.

Off-Road Ability

If off-roading is important to you, the Frontier is the only realistic choice in this comparison. The high-end PRO-4X trim is equipped with hill descent control, active brake limited slip, and hill start assist to make wilderness exploration a realistic option. Unfortunately, there’s no equivalent trim in the Maverick range.

Safety Systems

Both trucks are fitted with a wide range of driver assist and safety features to make your drive more comfortable and secure. Key options on both include lane departure warnings, blind spot monitoring, and braking assist. However, the Nissan gains a mark through the availability of adaptive cruise control, an option not available on the Ford.
